Her creative portfolio includes several fashion collections, work as a fashion designer for a number of advertising agencies. She has already completed designing costumes for the Turkish Gambit motion picture which will be released soon. As a stylist Maria works with many popular pop singers, stage and movie actors. Recently Nadezhda Babkina's group named Muzhiki (peasant fellows), including the singer herself, has donned costumes by Maria Sharoyeva.

Maria, what has caused you to abandon your career as a musician? I started drawing at 21 and realized that I could never live without this ... I think it's fate. Suddenly I perceived myself to be completely a person of painting. This is why I stopped taking lessons in the musical academy… 
Have you had to overcome something in yourself when making this choice? 
Surely, I was aware that I was interrupting my musical schooling. By my yearning was such that I just couldn't help myself... I am happy that my parents have been in favor of my choice... But subsequently you decided to train as a clothing designer… Yes, I had already been an accomplished artist when I realized that I wanted to study at the Vyacheslav Zaitsev's Fashion Laboratory. I just took my canvases, sketches and went to see him at the exam in his studio. Prior to this I told myself: "If they accept me, it will mean that I am capable of something..." First Vyacheslva Mikhailovich was dead against my taking his classes. He told me: "You are an artist, what are you doing here?" But I was quite adamant. Then he smiled: "There's really something in you..." That's how I started studying under Zaitsev. There is a fascinating atmosphere in his classes, quite favorable for a person to discover and utilize his or her true capacities. 
Your collections have unusual titles, such as Poste Restante, Materialization of Space. What do they mean? 
Each collection should have its own theme. And such theme emerges from a multitude of free associations. The theme can be expressed in colors, in the fabric texture, in patterns... And the title naturally arises from my associations. 
In addition to working on your collections, you cooperate with movie directors and advertising agencies. What is the difference in creative objectives in these two cases? 
The collections are the results of my own creative efforts. While in the cinema and in advertising this is more like a job with many people looking over your shoulder, supervising you: the director, producer, client... But I liked working as the assistant costume designer for the Fayziev's Turkish Gambit motion picture. I had to get used the main heroine's image, thoroughly read the script for a long time in order to implement the idea behind her costume… 
Would you say a few words about your work on costumes for Nadezhda Babkina and her group..? 
Nadezhda Babkina phoned me one day - I had been recommended to her by Lyubov' Grechishnikova - and told me that she had organized a group named Muzhiki and they needed designer costumes. They are young guys, greatly differing from one another, their singing is very interesting... The problem was to create costumes without any specific style which could be changed, transformed in time... After designing the costumes for the boys I started thinking about a costume for Nadezhda. What resulted was not a folk costume by a long shot, but it got naturally integrated in her image... I had to take a different view of the singer, discern her outside her folk singer type… 
What are you working on these days? There will be a fashion week show early in April. I am preparing for this, creating a new collection... But the collection vision can change with the very last item so it's not worth talking about it yet…
